What to Eat After Working Out to Recover Properly
You've finished your workout. You're tired, sweaty, and hungry. What you eat in the next 30-60 minutes makes the difference between a good recovery and a wasted day. Post-workout nutrition isn't a treat — it's part of your training.
What does your body need after working out?
After exercise, your body needs three things:
- Protein — to repair and build muscle fibres.
- Carbohydrates — to replenish spent glycogen.
- Hydration — water and electrolytes lost through sweat.
Ideal ratio: protein + carbohydrates
The recommended proportion is 3:1 or 4:1 (carbohydrates:protein). That means if you take in 30 g of protein, pair it with 90-120 g of carbohydrates. This speeds up recovery and muscle protein synthesis.
The best post-workout options
Poké bowl
Rice (carbohydrates) + salmon or chicken (protein) + edamame + avocado. It's the perfect post-workout meal: complete, balanced, and delicious. At Lettus, the Lettus Poke and the Tuna Poke are ideal after the gym.
Salad with protein
Green leaf base + quinoa + grilled chicken + chickpeas + lemon dressing. Light but nutritious. Our Ensalada Chef is a complete option.
Recovery smoothie
Banana + protein powder + oat milk + peanut butter. Quick to have and easy to digest if you don't feel like solid food right after the gym.
Chicken wrap
Wholegrain tortilla + chicken + fresh vegetables + yogurt sauce. The Chicken Wrap from Lettus combines lean protein with quality carbohydrates.
What you should avoid
- Skipping your meal — your body needs nutrients to recover.
- Ultra-processed food — pizza or fries won't give you what you need.
- Protein alone without carbohydrates — you need both for optimal recovery.
Find your post-workout meal at any Lettus location, or place your order online to pick up on your way out of the gym.
